Technical Architect Advisor – Role Information
Role Overview
One of ARB’s functions is to investigate complaints about the competence and conduct of architects on the Register.
To support its investigations, ARB may appoint Technical Architect Advisors to provide independent professional advice on architectural and technical matters arising from complaints.
The Role
Technical Architect Advisors provide independent technical insight to ARB during the early stages of an investigation. Their role is to help ARB understand the architectural and technical issues raised in complaints so that cases can be assessed effectively and proportionately.
Technical advice may be requested in a variety of formats depending on the needs of the case. This may include:
• Providing informal technical advice via telephone or video call
• Responding to technical queries via email correspondence
• Reviewing documentation and providing brief written comments
• Producing a short written report where more detailed advice is required
Technical Architect Advisors are not responsible for conducting investigations, interviewing parties, or carrying out site inspections. Their role is limited to providing independent professional advice to support ARB’s case assessment and early investigation processes.
Technical Architect Advisors will not be required to attend Professional Conduct Committee hearings.
Independence and Conflicts of Interest
Technical Architect Advisors must act independently and impartially when providing advice to ARB.
Advisors must declare any actual, potential, or perceived conflicts of interest in relation to a case before accepting an instruction. This may include, for example, any prior professional involvement with the architect, client, project, or any other party connected to the complaint.
Where a conflict of interest is identified, ARB will determine whether it is appropriate for the advisor to accept the instruction. Advisors may be asked to decline or withdraw from providing advice where a conflict exists or could reasonably be perceived.
Technical Architect Advisors must ensure that all information relating to ARB cases is treated as strictly confidential and must not be disclosed to third parties without ARB’s prior consent.
Eligibility
To be considered for this role, you must:
• Be eligible to work in the UK
• You must be a registered architect in the UK of good standing
Essential knowledge and experience:
• Ability to explain complex architectural or technical issues clearly to non-specialists
• Broad and recent experience in architectural practice and technical matters
• Ability to review documentation and identify relevant technical issues efficiently
• Strong analytical skills and sound professional judgement
• Ability to provide clear and concise written advice where required
• An understanding of professional standards and regulatory processes
• Experience of working with professional regulators, disciplinary processes, or providing expert advice is desirable but not essential.

Additional Information
Term of Office
Technical Architect Advisors are appointed for a period of four years in the first instance. The appointment may be renewed for a further period of four years, subject to satisfactory performance. The term of office will commence on a date to be agreed by ARB. A person carrying out this specific role may be appointed for a maximum period of two consecutive terms, e.g. eight years, in line with ARB’s appointment policy.
Time commitment
Appointments will normally be made from a pool of advisors with relevant expertise and experience, and ARB will instruct advisors on a case-by-case basis.
Technical Architect Advisors will be instructed on a case-by-case basis. The volume of work will vary depending on ARB’s caseload and the nature of the issues raised.
Advice may range from brief consultations to short written reports. Most work will be carried out remotely.
Fees
Advisers will be eligible to claim an hourly fee of £120 and entitled to claim, in accordance with ARB’s Guidance, expenses for travel and subsistence. These payments are subject to tax and National Insurance contributions, and the deductions are made at source.
