Training

The Institute of Regulation provides training and development in the theory and practice of regulation.

We currently offer four professional development programmes:

  • The is a two hour online training session designed as an introductory course to regulation, tailored for individuals who are relatively new to the regulation sector - though ‘seasoned’ regulatory experts have also appreciated attending.

The session is structured to equip individuals with a solid foundation in the field of regulation, ensuring participants are well-prepared to navigate the complexities of this sector.

  • This course is a two day in person event specifically designed as a foundation for regulatory professionals. It is therefore suitable for those new to regulation or with some limited regulatory experience, but no prior regulatory training.

Delivered through an engaging mix of presentation and seminar discussion.

  • New in 2024, this masterclass series has been designed for executives and non-executives of UK regulators. Adapted from a highly successful programme developed in New Zealand, Professor Jeroen van der Heijden leads. The masterclasses offer an opportunity to learn and network together with some of the most senior decision makers in UK regulation today.

A course prospectus is available, providing details of both the online and in-person masterclasses here .

  • The Understanding Regulation course offers an intensive introduction to some of the core concepts and approaches in the field of regulation.

     This one-day course seeks to:

    • facilitate a ‘regulatory analysis’ perspective that builds on an appreciation of different regulatory approaches and concepts

    • provide space for mutual exploration and discussion of regulatory experiences

    • enable you to confidently apply these concepts in your day-to-day work so as to support your organisation’s broader approach towards regulation.

The course does not require any prior knowledge of theories and approaches in regulation. The sole prerequisite is to join the conversation in the spirit of mutual learning.

During the day, the course will cover themes such as:

    • different approaches and theories of regulation

    • alternative ways of regulatory standard-setting and regulatory enforcement

    • debates regarding regulatory excellence in view of stakeholder engagement and smart regulation.

“This thought provoking course provided and insightful overview of up-to-date thinking about effective regulation. I think it would be both an essential introduction for beginners and a useful refresher for those who have been working in this area for many years.”
