The Institute of Regulation provides a structured learning journey aligned to the DBT Core Regulatory Skills Framework. 

The Introductory online session is aligned to Awareness level and provides essential knowledge for those new to regulation. 

Essentials of Regulation is aligned to Working level and supports the development of practical understanding, skills and networks. 

Fundamentals of Regulation is aligned to Practitioner level and focuses on building advanced understanding and applied capability. 

The Masterclass is aligned to Expert and Expert Leader level and is designed for senior professionals and leaders shaping regulatory practice. This course is offered both in person and online.

  • Essentials of Regulation is a one-day, in-person course designed to introduce the core concepts that underpin effective regulatory practice. Developed in response to delegate feedback, this course is an evolution of our previous Understanding Regulation course, with refreshed content, enhanced structure and an even stronger focus on practical application.

    Ideal for those new to regulation or looking to strengthen their foundational knowledge, the course explores key themes such as why regulation exists, how regulatory frameworks operate, approaches to enforcement, and the tools used to assess regulatory impact.

    Delivered through a mix of expert-led insights, practical examples and interactive discussion, the course encourages participants to think like a regulator and apply concepts confidently in their day-to-day roles. It also provides a valuable opportunity to connect with peers from across sectors and build networks within the regulatory community.

    The course is led by Professor Martin Lodge, Professor of Political Science and Public Policy at the London School of Economics. A leading expert in the field, Martin brings regulatory theory to life through real-world examples drawn from a wide range of sectors, creating an engaging and accessible learning experience for all participants.

  • This two day course provides a comprehensive introduction to the principles, structures, and practice of modern regulation. It is designed for professionals working in regulatory, policy, compliance, or oversight roles who want to build a strong grounding in how regulation operates in theory and in practice. The course is led by Professor Martin Lodge, a leading expert in regulatory studies.

    Across the programme, participants explore the purpose of regulation, different regulatory models and tools, governance and accountability, risk based approaches, enforcement, and the challenges regulators face in complex environments. The course combines expert input with discussion and practical examples, supporting participants to strengthen their understanding, confidence, and effectiveness in regulatory roles.

  • This evening masterclass is an intensive series of online seminars designed for regulatory and compliance professionals seeking a deeper understanding of regulatory theory, history, and practice. Led by Professor Jeroen van der Heijden, the programme explores key concepts shaping modern regulation and their relevance to real world governance challenges.

    Delivered across four interactive two hour sessions, each seminar combines short pre recorded lectures, guided discussion, and pre reading to support reflective learning. Participants examine core regulatory ideas, contemporary issues, and practical implications for organisations, with opportunities to tailor discussion to the cohort’s interests. The course also includes an optional one to one tutorial discussion and requires no formal assessment.
