Agricultural Supply Chain Adjudicator

Department for Environment Food & Rural Affairs

York, Bristol, Newcastle, or London, with flexible and part-time working available.

Salary: £75,000.00 - £117,800.00 FTE. It is expected that the postholder will initially work 2-3 days a week.

Application Deadline: Mar 6, 2024

DEFRA is the UK government department responsible for safeguarding our natural environment, supporting our world-leading food and farming industry, and sustaining a thriving rural economy. Our broad remit means we play a major role in people's day-to-day life, from the food we eat and the air we breathe, to the water we drink.

Our team’s remit is responsible for improving transparency in the agri-food chain, improving the negotiating power of the farmers that work hard to keep us fed.

This is an exciting opportunity to lead a new office aimed at improving supply chain transparency in the UK dairy industry, with planned expansion to other agricultural sectors. As the inaugural Agricultural Supply Chain Adjudicator, you will be responsible for ensuring that the Fair Dealing Obligations (Milk) Regulations that were introduced to Parliament in February 2024 are understood by the industry, adhered to and, in cases of non-compliance, that enforcement is fair, proportionate and effective. You will discharge adjudicatory authority where required, on behalf of the Secretary of State, and may issue financial penalties where you deem it necessary. Leading a small team of civil servants, you will also play a key role as a member of the senior leadership team within the Agri-Food Chain directorate. You will personally be the face of the enforcement office and will make binding decisions independently, but on behalf of, Ministers.

We are seeking an individual who can combine exceptional adjudication skills with the ability to influence, support and command effective relationships across all sectors that the regulations impact. You will have significant experience of reaching evidence based conclusions and determinations on regulatory and legal issues along with a track record of building positive relationships within varied and complex sectors. You will be an accomplished communicator and able to demonstrate the positive impact of your leadership in shaping teams and organisations.

This will be a fast-paced role in a priority policy area for Defra; the first of its kind in an area with a vital remit for British industry and consumers.
