Job Title: Chief Economist

Salary: up to £163,000

Contract: Full-time

Location: London/Glasgow/Cardiff

Application Deadline: 26/06/2026

Job description:

The electrification of transport, industry and households represents one of the most significant economic and industrial transformations in generations. Ofgem has a critical role to play in delivering that transition successfully.

As Great Britain's independent energy regulator, Ofgem works to protect consumers, support economic growth, attract investment and enable the transition to a net zero energy system. The decisions we make today will shape the affordability, resilience and sustainability of the UK's energy system for decades to come.

We are now seeking an outstanding economist to join us as Chief Economist – a newly created role reporting directly to the Chief Executive and working closely with the Board and Executive Committee. This is a rare opportunity to influence decisions affecting every household and business in Great Britain, while helping Ofgem become a global leader in energy regulation.

You will lead Ofgem's economics profession and analytical capability, providing strategic leadership across a diverse and high-profile portfolio that includes retail market reform, network price controls, competition issues and the transition to net zero. You will ensure that high-quality economic analysis sits at the heart of regulatory decision-making and will represent Ofgem externally across government, industry and the wider economics community.

We are looking for a senior economist with a strong track record of applying economic analysis to complex regulatory, market and public policy challenges. You will bring experience of leading high-performing analytical teams within large-scale and/or highly regulated environments, alongside the credibility and judgement to influence at the highest levels.

You may come from energy, government, regulation or another complex environment. What matters most is your ability to combine intellectual leadership with a commitment to public service and your motivation to shape the future of energy regulation at a defining moment for the sector and the wider economy.
